What is website defacement attack
what is website defacing, Website defacement is an similar to designing graffiti on a wall, only it happens virtually. Website's appearance change - may the attacker change the website home page completely with another page, pictures and/or words are scrawled across the defaced website.
Why Websites are Defaced?
Attackers/ hackers may have different motives in this attack, when they deface a website. Political motive is one. Attackers who are against a government or a separate/particular movement can choose to deface related websites to air their views. Attackers who do this are known as "hacktivists". hacktivists is an Anonymous hackers who attacks for social purpose only, They may change the content of the defaced website with a picture or a different message of their choice.
There are also some other attackers may choose to defacing a website for fun - to mock site owners by finding website loopholes/ vulnerabilities and exploiting these to deface the site. These attackers/ hackers "taunt" the site owners. Similar to hacktivits, these attackers deface a site with a picture, photos or a message of their choice.
In both cases, site owners faces' some damage to their reputation once their sites are defaced.
How attackers or hackers do this?
Now a day there are many different types of Pre-build tools which is easily available to deface website, some attackers do the deface with this Pre-build tools, or some professional hackers uses coding language and code themselves the deface page and replace this deface page with the original website index page with the help of website security loopholes/ vulnerability.
